South Sydney are in full control at the moment, on top of the table and playing like the title is already theirs. They may have some trouble coming off a bye last week, however, with the Storm also breathing down their necks to secure top place on the ladder. Titans commence new CEO hunt

The Gold Coast Titans will take a targeted approach as they hunt for a new chief executive following the shock resignation of David May.

The Titans confirmed on Tuesday that May had stepped down for personal reasons less than a year after taking over the helm of the NRL club.

The club has opted not to name an interim CEO while they search for a replacement, a hunt which will only focus on a few recommended candidates.

“We’re not going to go through a process like the Bulldogs did, where they had three and a half thousand applicants,” chairman Darryl Kelly told reporters.

“People within this organisation have enough contacts within the industry and outside the industry to make recommendations.

“We’ll only take recommendations from people we trust.”

Kelly said there was no timeframe on the search, saying only it would be “desirable” to find a new CEO as quickly as possible.

May’s decision was regretfully accepted by the Titans board after the Englishman had turned around a club that was reportedly on the brink of financial collapse when he took over in the middle of last year.

He denied rumours his decision was made following a deterioration of his relationship with managing director and former CEO Michael Searle, whom he replaced in a restructure of the club.

May said he was confident he left the club in a much better position than when he took over.

“It’s a reset, not a setback. We’re not going backwards,” May said.

“Whoever takes the job next has got a really exciting set of challenges.”

May will remain on the Gold Coast but says he will be spending time back in the United Kingdom to address the issues which forced his decision.

Titans coach John Cartwright said he was confident the club’s players won’t be distracted by the off-field drama, especially after last year’s experiences.

“I’m here to coach. The players are here to play. That’s our job,” Cartwright said.

“There’s nothing we can go through that we didn’t go through last year.”

Kelly said the new CEO would most likely be appointed from outside the club and while a rugby league or sporting background would be an advantage it wouldn’t be a prerequisite.

“This is a people business,” he said.

“That’s the asset we have. The management of those people is going to determine how successful we are.”
