NRL can’t lose Inglis, says Smith

NRL boss Dave Smith will speak with Greg Inglis in a bid to keep the South Sydney superstar in rugby league.

Despite being off-contract with Souths at the end of 2017, Inglis is the subject of massive money offers from European rugby.

Sonny Bill Williams, Sam Burgess and Ben Te’o all defected to the rival code at the end of 2014 and Smith believes the NRL can’t afford to let Inglis do likewise.

“Greg is an absolute superstar, a terrific player,” Smith said at the ARL Commission Annual General Meeting on Friday.

“He is a wonderful human being, he is a fantastic player, he is exactly the sort of superstar, and there are many, many, many of them, we want to keep in our game.

“People will make their own decisions at the end of the day, we saw that with Sonny Bill and we saw that with Sam Burgess

“But these are not players we want to lose, of course we want to keep them in the game.

“We would always want to be competitive in a competitive market and he is exactly the sort of individual you would want to keep in the game

Inglis is being promoted as the face of the NRL in 2015 and the star of its advertising campaign, after a similar campaign was pulled in 2009 when he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend.

Smith predicted a bright future at the AGM, amid continued talk the next TV rights deal , up for renewal in two years, could net the code $2 billion.

He was granted extraordinary powers last year in order to keep players in the game, through the NRL weighing in with added financial incentives and Smith said he would do all he could to keep Inglis in the NRL.

“Of course I will talk to Greg, he is one of the players I do talk to so of course I will talk to Greg,” Smith said.

“he is someone we would never want to lose, like many, many other players.”
