Norman the man for Broncos: league greats

At 165cm, Allan Langer is not exactly an expert on how to fill big shoes.

But the Broncos legend believed Corey Norman had done just that in Darren Lockyer’s absence at Brisbane.

Langer joined ex-teammates Mick Hancock, Steve Renouf and Kerrod Walters on Wednesday to display the Broncos’ heritage jersey to be worn on Friday night against the Dragons to mark the 20th anniversary of the club’s maiden 1992 title.

While proud to look back at their achievement 20 years ago, Langer’s eyes were on the future – and he believed Norman had a bright one wearing the No.6 jersey synonymous with Lockyer.

“He (Norman) was the player probably under the most pressure leading into this season,” Langer said.

“But I think he is doing a marvellous job.

“(Halfback) Peter Wallace has also stepped up as a senior player and bringing him on – it will take time but they are forming a great combination.

Hancock was also convinced Norman’s future lay at pivot.

“Every time Corey played (at five-eighth) in the past, he knew Darren was coming back – now it is all Corey Norman,” said former flyer Hancock, second behind Lockyer on the all-time list for Broncos’ games with 274.

“I think it will give him confidence that there is no more Darren Lockyer.

“Because it is up to him now. He is the one who has got to do it.

“And the more experience he gets in that position, the better he will be.”

The 1992 Broncos team reads like a who’s who – Langer, Renouf, Lazarus, O’Neill, Carne, Gillmeister … the list goes on.

“It was a great team. I remember in the dressing room before the grand final thinking we were always going to win – I just had no doubt,” Renouf said.

“It was the club’s first premiership so it is great to get back with these guys and celebrate it.

“It is something that can’t be taken away from us. It helped build this club – we are very proud.”

The Broncos went on to dominate the decade but Renouf thought they could have been better.

“(Inaugural Broncos owner) Porky Morgan made a call back then that we would win 11 in a row – to be honest with the team we had, we could have potentially done that,” he said.

“We backed up in ’93 but didn’t do the same in 1994 … potentially, we could have done a lot better.”

As impressive as the 1992 outfit were, Hancock’s mind boggles at what the current crop of Broncos can do.

“People ask you to compare players, but you can’t do it,” he said.

“The game has evolved now. All the young kids have a lot more skills than we possessed.

“And the current crop put it all on the line. They have no shame in what they try to do.

“The current-day players do things I don’t think we could ever do, things I have never seen before.”
