No Taumalolo and Harris for Kiwis: reports

New Zealand’s rugby league World Cup campaign has been dealt a massive blow with the expected unavailability of star NRL forwards Jason Taumalolo and Tohu Harris.

Ahead of the squad announcement on Thursday, News Corp Australia reports North Queensland lock Taumalolo has turned his back on the nation he’s represented 10 times — electing to represent Tonga.

Melbourne premiership player Harris, who’s bound for the Warriors next season, has been ruled out through injury, according to Fairfax.

The absence of Taumalolo and Harris further weakens a Kiwi forward pack that will be without suspended pair Jesse Bromwich of the Storm and Gold Coast’s Kevin Proctor — 64 Tests worth of experience between them.

News Corp reports Taumalolo’s decision was in response to coach David Kidwell’s denial of Bromwich and Proctor’s participation in the tournament over a drugs scandal this year.

Experienced Warriors hooker Isaac Luke has reportedly been overlooked.

The Kiwis, the 2008 champions, begin their World Cup campaign on October 28 against Samoa in Auckland.
