New Qld halves a bonus for NSW: Walters

Queensland coach Kevin Walters admits it is a “bonus” for NSW that the Maroons will be using their third different halves combination in as many State of Origin games in the series decider.

But Walters was riled by suggestions it was a concern he could not confirm his line-up after naming an alphabetical game three squad on Monday.

Debutant Cameron Munster and Maroons bench utility Michael Morgan are in line to replace injured five-eighth Johnathan Thurston (shoulder) in July 12’s Origin III in Brisbane.

Rookie Anthony Milford wore No.6 in game one before Thurston returned to kick the match-winning sideline conversion in Origin II while nursing what would be a season-ending shoulder injury.

Now Queensland are aiming to become the first team since NSW in 1990 to win a series with three different five-eighths.

“It’s probably a bonus for NSW that this has happened,” Walters said.

“It’s not ideal but it is exciting we are giving opportunities to people that at the start of the year wouldn’t have thought of getting one.”

Walters said he would finalise his No.6 at their Origin camp on the Gold Coast but didn’t think it was a concern he was yet to decide on his five-eighth.

“It might be a concern for you guys but we know what we are doing,” Walters said.

“We have got some good options there.

“That’s for us to get our head around and then when the time is right we will let everyone know what we are doing.”

Walters could only confirm that Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt would make his Origin debut as a bench utility.

Along with Munster, Hunt’s selection took the number of debutants Queensland have blooded this series to eight.

Walters hopes Queensland will give their latest rookies a debut to remember.

“I think it is the first time since 1996 that NSW have had the same team for all three games,” Walters said.

“But what we will use as motivation is we have two guys coming in at Suncorp and it’s a great opportunity for them to do themselves and their state proud.”

Meanwhile, Walters dismissed concerns for lock Josh McGuire after the Brisbane hard-man suffered a nasty concussion during NRL action at the weekend.

“Our medical staff are working with the Broncos on that,” Walters said.

“What happened to Josh wasn’t good to look at but we will do what we can to make sure he passes all the tests this week.

“He will be on light duties but I am sure on Wednesday week he will be ready to go.”
