Melbourne star Cameron Munster faces an anxious wait on whether his stand-out rugby league season will end in a dream Kangaroos call-up for the upcoming World Cup.
Australia coach Mal Meninga will name a 24-man squad on Tuesday with plenty of intrigue surrounding who will partner Cooper Cronk in the halves.
Munster is stuck in a three-way battle with North Queensland playmaker Michael Morgan and current Kangaroos back-up James Maloney.
Selection would cap off an unforgettable season for the Storm five-eighth, who starred in his State of Origin debut for Queensland and helped Melbourne to an NRL premiership victory on Sunday.
“It’s been a massive year. I don’t know about the World Cup. I’ve been happy enough just to get mentioned the last two weeks,” Munster said after the win.
“It would be nice to pull on the green and gold but I don’t want to dream too much.”
The Storm’s big three grabbed the headlines after the match, however Munster was just as damaging with a game-high three line break assists and six tackle busts.
The 23-year-old also carried the ball for 101 metres to slightly outpoint Morgan, who finished with one line break, a try assist and 23 metres.
“We knew how good they’d been playing and Michael Morgan has been the form player of the finals,” Munster said.
“We had to try and get at him as much as we could and try to minimise his attacking ability otherwise we would have been in a bit of strife.”
Storm teammate Billy Slater is all but certain to cap off his outstanding season with a recall to the Kangaroos team, three years after last pulling on the jumper.
His inclusion could be one of at least four changes Meninga makes from the side that beat New Zealand in their most recent Test in May.
Incumbent lock Trent Merrin has been ruled out with injury.
Munster also believed unheralded forwards Dale Finucane and Jordan McLean both warranted selection in the green and gold, or the NSW State of Origin team next year.
“I reckon they’re ready for Origin. I reckon Macca and Dale have been the form forwards over the last 7-8 weeks and deserve a spot in the World Cup,” Munster said.
The Kangaroos open their World Cup campaign against England in Melbourne on October 27, with their other group matches against France in Canberra and Lebanon in Sydney.
