Moylan not fussed by playing back for City

Matt Moylan insists he is unconcerned by being picked at fullback for this weekend’s City-Country clash, declaring NSW Origin coach Laurie Daley already knows he can play in the halves.

Moylan was at five-eighth for the Blues in last year’s dead-rubber win over Queensland after playing the first two games of the series at fullback.

However the emergence of James Tedesco – who was unavailable for City-Country due to concussion – is likely to mean Moylan’s chances of earning a NSW jersey for the series opener on May 31 will be in the No.6 jersey.

Moylan hasn’t played in the halves since that last Origin encounter, and the original plan was for him to return there for the final-ever match for City.

But that has since been denied due to the amount of withdrawals.

“Laurie knows that I can play there,” Moylan told AAP.

“It obviously would have been good to get a run there but I’m happy just to play and enjoy the week.”

City coach Brad Fittler has named Bryce Cartwright at five-eighth, with fellow Panthers playmaker Nathan Cleary selected on the bench.

It means the two will share time in the halves, and that Moylan won’t be given a chance to audition in the front line at any point in the match.

But Moylan said he held no angst towards any clubs who denied their players selection, which in turn forced him to be stuck at the back.

“It happens every year with this,” Moylan said.

“They’ve got to look after their players which is understandable.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for some of the other guys to get another game.”

Meanwhile, Fittler said shifting Moylan to five-eighth might have been detrimental to the Penrith captain amid the team’s form slump.

“The way he’s playing at Penrith – and the way Penrith are going – they’re not playing with that much confidence,” Fittler said.

“So putting him in a different position may hurt his confidence even more.

“We’ll give him the opportunity to have a lot lighter week without having to worry about playing for two points.”
