In-form Warriors back rower Elijah Taylor says pride and honesty following their record NRL loss to Penrith has helped the team begin to turn their season around.

The Warriors were written off by many as a force for the 2013 season after losing eight of their first 10 games, topped off by the 62-6 loss against Penrith in mid-May.

The team got pilloried after that effort, especially when the players were seen with smiles on their faces after the loss.

“We got hammered for that,” Taylor said.

“We didn’t intend it to go that way but it showed how much people cared about how we do.”

A crisis meeting of the team was called in the following days, and since then the team has won its last three, the latest an 18-16 win over fourth-placed Manly.

“That crisis meeting made everyone be honest with themselves to their teammates and it’s showing on the field,” he said.

“A month ago we would have lost that game. We probably would have got touched up at the end of the game, but again we showed our resolve and character to come back.”

Taylor started the season at hooker after an injury to Nathan Friend but has added more to the Warriors in attack since going back to his favoured back row position and was rewarded with the try which got the Warriors back into the Manly game.

He says he’s making an effort to be there to receive offloads from ballplayers like Sam Rapira and Feleti Mateo.

“They’re always dangerous and capable of giving you an offload,” he said. “I just have to be in the position to receive.”
