Joel Monaghan crossed for two tries as defending champions Warrington Wolves moved into the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup with a 52-6 win over Salford City Reds on Sunday.
Former Canberra Raider Monaghan had a try in each half in addition to further Wolves’ four pointers from Chris Hill, Brett Hodgson, Stefan Ratchford (two), Micky Higham, Lee Briers and Paul Wood.
Jodie Broughton had the sole consolation score for Brian Noble’s side who currently sit bottom of the Super League.
But on a weekend when Leeds Rhinos, last year’s runners’ up, went crashing out of the Cup, there was never any danger of Warrington falling to a similar upset.
Elsewhere in Sunday’s fifth round Wigan Warriors, champions back in 2011, ran riot in a 46-14 win against Hull K R as reigning man of steel Sam Tomkins crossed for four tries in the win.
Pat Richards kicked seven goals in addition to a try of his own while Liam Farrell, Josh Charnley and Ian Thornley also crossed the try line.
Widnes Vikings are also into the quarter-finals after they ended up 36-0 victors on Sunday against Championship side Workington.
David Allen crossed twice for Dennis Betts’ side who are down in 11th place in the Super League table but had far too much for their lower league opposition.
Chris Dean, Stefan Marsh, Adam Lawton and Parramatta-bound Gareth Hock were also try scorers for the visitors to seal a spot in the last eight.
In Sunday’s early kick-off Kevin Larroyer crossed for four tries as Catalan Dragons thoroughly outclassed Championship side York in racking up a 92-8 win.
Morgan Escare had a hat-trick of his own, Remi Casty had two and the French side collected seven other tries as they strolled into the quarter-finals.
On Saturday Leroy Cudjoe was the star of the show as his two tries guided Huddersfield Giants to a shock 24-8 win against last year’s runners up and reigning Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos.
Shaun Lunt and Joe Wardle also crossed for Paul Anderson’s side who produced a titanic defensive effort after Wardle’s second-half dismissal put them under pressure.
Leeds have been finalists in the last three seasons but a fourth Wembley appearance was never in the offing against an inspired Giants side despite two scores from Kallum Watkins.
On Friday, Gareth Ellis crossed for his first Hull FC try as they sealed a place in the last eight at the expense of Wakefield Wildcats in a 24-6 win.
Richard Horne put the hosts ahead before Ellis’ score, and Kirk Yeaman’s try ensured the Airlie Birds went in 16-0 up at the break.
Jay Pitts extended the lead after half-time with Wakefield floundering, but Ali Lauitiiti’s score gave them hope until Pitts ran in his second to confirm victory.
Craig Gower was the star of the show for the London Broncos as they upset Bradford Bulls with a 25-16 win.
The former Penrith Panthers halfback was instrumental in laying on all four tries for the Broncos scored by Matt Cook, Kieran Dixon, Scott Wheeldon and Michael Witt.
