Mitchell made for big NRL moment: Robinson

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is confident centre Latrell Mitchell hasn’t lost his head after soaring to the dizzying heights of NRL finals glory.

Mitchell showed why he has long been destined to be a star with a match-winning solo try in the Roosters’ qualifying final win over Brisbane a fortnight ago.

Robinson insists Mitchell deserves all the accolades he received after the win, but watched closely as to how the 20-year-old handled his big stage success.

“He should’ve been applauded for what he did,” Robinson said of Mitchell’s play.

“Externally he would’ve been risen to some heights over those couple of days about the way he finished off that game, but Latrell hasn’t changed.

“He knows he’s wrapped up his game really well over the last few months. He knows the work that goes into playing and then he knows that he can produce those moments when it comes.

“That’s the beauty about learning for a young player. He’s learnt well and quicker than most.”

Mitchell looms as a gamebreaker in Saturday’s preliminary final against North Queensland, who were on the receiving end of an even better effort by the youngster in July.

In just the second minute of the match, he caught the ball along the sideline on the halfway mark before burning three defenders, including Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt.

“That try was really our fault,” Feldt said.

“Our defensive system broke down and any good player’s really going to take full advantage of it.

“He’s got his taste of his first finals game last weekend and he handled it pretty well, which is good to see.

“Coming up against James Roberts, he did a pretty good number on him.

“He’s obviously going to be hard to handle.

“But since that game, our right edge has come a long way in leaps and bounds.

“I got all the trust in Kane (Linnett), he’s done a really good job on our side since he’s moved over.”
