Mitchell injury sours Souths’ rout of Eels

Latrell Mitchell has suffered a hamstring injury but South Sydney still made a premiership statement with a 38-0 flogging of Parramatta.

Yet to beat a top-six team before Thursday night, the Rabbitohs claimed their first big scalp of the year in style.

They didn’t just beat the Eels, they handed them their heaviest defeat at Bankwest Stadium.

The only concern for Souths was Mitchell, a week out from a now heavyweight clash with Melbourne.

With the fullback’s leg up in the air trying to save a try, teammate Jaxson Paulo collided with Mitchell and extended his hamstring well beyond its natural limits.

The Bunnies star stayed down but was eventually able to slowly limp around the edge of the field with the assistance of trainers and will have scans to reveal the extent of the injury.

But it shouldn’t take away from just how good Souths were.

A week after putting 38 on Manly in the first half, they were arguably even more impressive in the opening 40 minutes when they went to the break against the Eels leading 22-0.

The win all but assured Souths a finals spot, given they’ll likely finish the round just one win outside the top four.

Parramatta will be hoping to hold on to a place in the top four themselves, with their form fading in the past seven weeks.

Five-eighth Dylan Brown finished the night on the sidelines, after initially playing on with an ankle injury in the first half.

Souths were dynamite on their left and still pretty dangerous on their right as they found the Eels wanting on their edges as they racked up seven unanswered tries.

And this was from a backline missing Dane Gagai, Alex Johnston, James Roberts and Braidon Burns.

Their first try in the fifth minute set the scene, courtesy of a lovely left-edge move that had Mitchell’s quick hands put Corey Allan over.

The fullback was having a field day before his injury.

At one stage he looked set to be trapped in his in-goal when a bomb bounced but he stepped, swerved and bumped his way out before Souths were eventually tackled on the half-way line.

Their halves were just as impressive.

They combined brilliantly for one first-half try when Adam Reynolds drifted across field and found a gap for Cody Walker to charge through from 30 metres out.

In the next set, Walker broke down the left edge to put the Bunnies on the attack, allowing Reynolds to grubber for Jaydn Su’A to score a few plays later.

Reynolds had one of his own later in the game when he ran it on the last for Paulo, before the winger got it back in for this No.7 to score.

Campbell Graham bagged a double and Paulo had one as Souths terrorised the Eels’ edges and took their team tally to 31 tries in the past five games.
