Mini wants to skipper Roosters in 2013

Anthony Minichiello is hoping to captain the Sydney Roosters in 2013 in what could be the veteran’s final season with the NRL club. The 31-year-old ended months of speculation about his future when he signed a one-year contract extension with the Roosters on Friday. And with current skipper Braith Anasta joining Wests Tigers next year, the Roosters will be looking for a new captain and could turn to their inspirational fullback. “Look I’m probably the most senior player at the club and it would be nice to do that (captain). It would be a privilege to do that as well,” Minichiello told Channel Nine. While he is hopeful of leading out the Roosters next season, Minichiello also wants to play with superstar Sonny Bill Williams who is rumoured to be joining the Bondi Junction club. “I hope he’s here next year that would be unbelievable, he holds the ball like a tennis ball. I’d love to run off him for those offloads.” The former Golden Boot recipient and premiership winner is excited at the prospect of finishing his career at the one club. The Roosters’ all-time leading try-scorer, Minichiello will play his 23 6th premiership game on Sunday against Newcastle, trailing only Luke Ricketson for most games at the club. Minichiello joined the Roosters in 1997 and will play his 14th season in first grade with the club next year. “It’s a great privilege to be a one club player especially at a foundation club like the Roosters,” Minichiello said. “I’m very excited about this new deal. The club has been very loyal to me and it’s great that it’s sorted and we can move forward.” The resilient No.1 cited Manly great Steve Menzies as an example of longevity in the game and said he wants to keep playing for as long as his body feels fine. Sydney Roosters chairman Nick Politis said Minichiello would play an important role mentoring the club’s young talent. “Anthony is a very proud clubman and we are delighted to repay his loyalty to the Roosters with this extension to his contract,” he said. “Mini has etched his place not only in the history books of our proud club but the game of rugby league and is a great ambassador both on and off the field. “His great work ethic means that he continues to rank as one of the game’s leading fullbacks and his experience will continue to benefit the young and talented squad around him.”
