Milford key to Brisbane NRL title: Walters

Former Brisbane captain Kevin Walters says Anthony Milford can deliver the NRL title to the Broncos, ending the club’s longest premiership drought.

Walters backed five-eighth Milford to not only inspire Brisbane in Sunday’s elimination final against St George Illawarra at Suncorp Stadium but also help them secure their first title since 2006.

Ex-Brisbane pivot Walters knows what it takes to win a title – he claimed a total of six in his playing career including five at his beloved Broncos.

And Walters liked what he saw from 24-year-old Milford.

Asked if Milford could deliver a premiership, Walters said: “I think he can.

“There’s no problems there. I see no reason why the Broncos can’t win something under Anthony.”

Milford had largely copped flak this year with critics claiming the talented playmaker had not been living up to his lucrative $4 million, four-season deal.

However, Walters said Milford had turned it around to help guide Brisbane to a home final with three straight wins.

“For the second half of the season he has been one of their best players,” Walters said.

“Anthony is one of those footy players who can do things that not many players can.

“That’s a real bonus for the Broncos in these end of season games where it can come down to individual brilliance.

“In the key moments I am sure Anthony can deliver.”

Walters said the best of Milford was yet to come.

“He’s getting better each week. His kicking game has gone to another level,” he said.

“(But) we haven’t seen the best of Anthony.”

Walters said Brisbane’s form reminded him of North Queensland’s unlikely run to the 2017 NRL grand final.

“The Cowboys got on a bit of a run towards the final last year and Brisbane are peaking at the right time,” he said.

“It’s just a matter of stringing three or four good games together, which they have done in the past, and there is no reason why they can’t again.”
