Meninga to make call on Thursday

Queensland Rugby League boss Peter Betros believes Mal Meninga will announce he is taking over the Kangaroos reins on Thursday.

“I believe the issue will be resolved tomorrow,” Betros told AAP.

“If I was a betting man I think he would enjoy the challenge of the Kangaroos.

“He has always been up for a challenge.”

Meninga has made no secret of his interest in coaching Australia after the long-serving Tim Sheens left his post earlier this year to take up a position with Super League outfit Salford.

Meninga had agreed to coach the Maroons, who he has led to victory in nine of the past 10 State of Origin series, for the next three seasons.

But QRL chairman Betros said they would not stand in Meninga’s way “after 10 years of loyal service”.

The ARL had previously made it clear that a current Origin coach could not be in charge of the national team at the same time.
