Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors Preview
The Warriors head to Melbourne aiming to break the longest rivalry losing streak since the 1970s.
The Storm have won all 16 matches over the past nine seasons by an average margin of 34-16.
But there have been close calls in the Warriors’ last two visits to AAMI Park: a 30-22 loss in 2023 after leading 18-6, and a 30-26 heart-breaker last year after conceding two tries in the last three minutes.
Both teams are 3-1 heading into this one.
The Storm bounced back from a 14-6 away loss to St George Illawarra with a blistering 48-28 win over Manly, Jahrome Hughes returning early from a broken hand and starring alongside fellow spine superstars Cameron Munster and Harry Grant.
The Warriors put a Vegas horror-show behind them with three straight gutsy wins, at home over Manly (36-16) and Sydney Roosters (14-6) and – in a stirring late surge – Wests Tigers at Campbelltown (26-24).
Halfback Luke Metcalf still needs to grow into the shot-caller role, but Wayde Egan and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad have been superb as the Warriors’ high-discipline, high-percentage play nets results.
Will Warbrick and Nelson Asofa-Solomona remain sidelined for an unchanged Storm.
The Warriors’ only change sees Rocco Berry belatedly return, with Ed Kosi an unlucky exclusion and Adam Pompey moving to the wing.
The Storm have scored at least 30 points in each of their last five matches at AAMI Park.
But hoodoos aside, they look a little short as $1.15 favourites.
The Warriors boast enough firepower to unsettle the 2024 runners-up and this could be one of the games of the season so far.
