Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors Preview
Warriors Set Sights on Ending Longstanding Storm Hoodoo in Melbourne
The Warriors head to Melbourne determined to end their longest losing streak against a single opponent since the 1970s.
The Storm have dominated the rivalry, winning all 16 encounters over the past nine seasons with an average scoreline of 34-16. However, the Warriors have come close to breaking the streak in their last two visits to AAMI Park: a 30-22 loss in 2023 after leading 18-6, and a heartbreaking 30-26 defeat last year, conceding two late tries in the final three minutes.
Both teams enter the clash with 3-1 records.
Melbourne bounced back from a 14-6 loss to St George Illawarra with an emphatic 48-28 win over Manly, fueled by the early return of Jahrome Hughes from a broken hand. Hughes combined seamlessly with fellow playmakers Cameron Munster and Harry Grant in a vintage Storm performance.
Meanwhile, the Warriors have recovered from a rough start in Las Vegas with three consecutive gritty victories. They took down Manly (36-16) and the Roosters (14-6) at home before staging a thrilling late comeback to edge Wests Tigers 26-24 in Campbelltown.
Halfback Luke Metcalf continues to grow into his role as the side’s chief organiser, while Wayde Egan and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad have stood out in a team that’s built its success on discipline and efficient execution.
The Storm remain unchanged, with Will Warbrick and Nelson Asofa-Solomona still sidelined. For the Warriors, Rocco Berry makes a delayed return, with Ed Kosi making way and Adam Pompey shifting to the wing.
Melbourne have piled on 30 or more points in each of their last five games at AAMI Park. But while history is against the Warriors, the $1.15 odds on the Storm seem a touch short. With firepower across the park, the Warriors are capable of rattling the 2024 runners-up—and this showdown could shape up as one of the season’s best so far.
