Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks Preview

Second on the ladder hosts first as the 7-1 Melbourne Storm and Cronulla Sharks square off at AAMI Park, though the unavailability of spine duo Jahrome Hughes and Ryan Papenhuyzen has rocked the home side’s hopes.

The Storm have won six straight, following up their 54-20 Anzac Day demolition of Souths – the only game they have been involved in to decided by more than eight points this season – with a nervy 22-20 eclipse of the Titans on the Gold Coast.

Tyran Wishart replaces Hughes (calf) at halfback, while Sua Fa’alogo will get a run at fullback following Papenhuyzen’s latest setback. Grant Anderson comes in on the wing.

The Sharks have barely put a foot wrong since their shock thrashing at the hands of the Tigers in Round 3, winning five in a row by double-digit margins. After training runs against the Cowboys (42-6) and Raiders (40-0), the Sharks showed they can still grind it out by outlasting the Dragons 20-10.

Cameron McInnes, Teig Wilton and Thomas Hazelton typified a steely, if slightly clunky, team effort, while Nicho Hynes continues to provide the polish. Royce Hunt replaces Toby Rudolf (knee) on the bench in the Sharks’ only change.

Melbourne has won six of its last seven against Cronulla, including a 54-10 AAMI Park romp in Round 15 in their only clash last year with Xavier Coates and Harry Grant both scoring twice. The Sharks have lost their last five at AAMI Park by at least 16 points.

The Storm, $1.80 favourites, are on an 11-match winning streak at AAMI Park. There’s enough blue-chip quality in the form of Munster and Grant, and attacking spark across the board, to get the job done here against a Sharks side that hasn’t yet faced anyone currently sitting higher than eighth.
