Mbye inks $3 million deal: reports

Canterbury are set to take a massive leap of faith on playmaker Moses Mbye, signing him to the club until the end of 2020 on a deal reportedly worth $3 million.

The $750,000-a-season deal will be one of the largest made for a player who has just 32 NRL games to his name, with Mbye set to sign off on the deal before the regular season kicks off.

The Bulldogs were desperate to lock down the halfback after losing Trent Hodkinson to Newcastle at the end of last year, and Mbye had attracted attention from Melbourne.

They now see him as a future captain of the club.

“We’re in the final stages of completing his contract,” Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle told News Corp Australia.

“Moses has made it known to us that he has aspirations in leadership and he has all the qualities you would expect from a club captain.”

Mbye came through the lower grades as an outside back, before securing his spot in the halves last season through injuries and suspensions to Josh Reynolds and Hodkinson.

He has only started in the halves in 23 first grade matches, but helped the Bulldogs to a six-game winning streak in the second half of last season.
