Marshall cleared to take on Eels in NRL

Wests Tigers playmaker Benji Marshall has been cleared of an ankle injury and will take the field for Monday’s NRL clash with Parramatta.

Marshall ruptured the lateral ligament in his left ankle in the Tigers’ controversial round three loss to Brisbane.

But the 33-year-old has made a swift recovery and has been running with the side the last several days.

“Benji’s trained well all week, we probably got lucky it was a 10-day turnaround. It’s one of those injuries where it blows up but over time he’ll be OK,” Cleary said.

“They blow up and swell up a lot and it’s pretty painful. They’re the sort of thing where if you can manage the swelling the first three or four days, you can come back pretty quick.”

Marshall’s return is a big boost for the Tigers who continue to be without Josh Reynolds due to a hamstring injury.

The former Kiwis playmaker and premiership winner has found a new lease on life in his second stint with the joint venture at a time when many expected his career to be winding down.

Ahead of Monday’s clash with the desperate and winless Eels at ANZ Stadium, he has been a big part of their 2-1 start which has seen them claim the big scalps of Melbourne and the Sydney Roosters.

Playing alongside Luke Brooks, who had his poster up on his wall when he was a kid, Marshall has the Tigers firing in the early rounds.

“It was really obvious that he was really keen to play and thought he had a lot to offer,” Cleary said.

“I think that’s shown.”
