Queensland rugby league selectors have handed veteran Petero Civoniceva the opportunity to end his celebrated Maroons career in the same successful fashion as fellow Origin great Darren Lockyer.
Civoniceva has been chosen as a starting prop in Queensland’s 19-man squad announced Monday for the opening game against NSW on Wednesday week.
A player at the other end of his representative career, Brisbane’s Matt Gillett, will make his Origin debut.
Darius Boyd’s indifferent NRL form was ignored with the Newcastle No.1 picked on the wing.
North Queensland’s Brent Tate was awarded the other wing spot in place of the injured Jharal Yow Yeh.
Coach Mal Meninga’s side was devoid of surprises as they begin their quest for an unprecedented seventh straight series win.
Lockyer enjoyed a fairytale end to his Queensland career as five-eighth during their 2-1 series win.
The opening State of Origin game is in Melbourne on May 23.
Queensland’s 19-man squad: Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Greg Inglis, Justin Hodges, Brent Tait, Jonathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk, Matt Scott, Cameron Smith (capt), Petero Civoniceva, Sam Thaiday, Nate Myles, Ashley Harrison. Interchange: Matt Gillett, Dave Taylor, Ben Hannant, David Shillington
18th man: Daly Cherry-Evans. Shadow: Dane Nielsen. Coach: Mal Meninga.
