Matt Scott’s teammates are ready to give the big prop as much emotional support as he needs when he joins them in camp after attending his mother Dianne’s funeral in the tiny Queensland township of Ilfracombe on Wednesday.

The North Queensland prop was with his grieving family and friends as his Queensland teammates – including Cowboys Johnathan Thurston, Brent Tate and Matty Bowen – kicked off preparations for next Wednesday night’s State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Both camps are battling their emotions after NSW hooker Robbie Farah’s mother Sonia also passed away 10 days ago.

Scott’s role in game three is yet to be defined.

Maroons coach Mal Meninga is anxious for the Cowboys’ co-captain to take as much time as he needs to decide whether he takes the field and deals with his emotions.

Tate, who failed to finish Wednesday’s late training session, said he believed it would be good for a grieving Scott to be in camp with the Queensland players, who – because of the distance – could not attend the funeral.

“I think it will be good for him to get around the boys – this is like a big family anyway,” said Tate.

“Knowing his mum’s background and how she loved watching him, she’d want him to play.

“I expect him to play.”

Maroons forward Nate Myles said it was difficult to know what Scott would do after battling through such a difficult period in his life.

“I don’t have any idea what it’s like to be in his shoes at the moment,” said Myles.

“It’s a tough one but, knowing Matty Scott, he puts his hand up to do everything and I think that’s how he will approach it.

“I wouldn’t be surprised (if he plays), no.”

Queensland cancelled a scheduled training session at Stockland Park mid-afternoon but ended up having a run at the ground late in the day.

The question of whether Greg Inglis or Matty Bowen would play fullback if Billy Slater is ruled out was no clearer after they both trained in the position on Wednesday.

Tate, who is back on the Origin scene for the first time since 2008, knows how much Bowen would love to play on Wednesday night.

“I know myself how much you miss it and these are the games (deciders) you want to play in,” said Tate.

“He’s no different.

“He doesn’t say too much or give too much away.

“But I know deep down and by his form at the Cowboys in recent weeks how much he wants to be here.”

Bowen played his last Origin game in 2007.
