Queensland prop Ben Hannant is in doubt for the State of Origin opener after leaving Parramatta Stadium on crutches on Saturday night.
Hannant suffered a calf injury in the 73rd minute of Parramatta’s upset win over Brisbane and with the Queensland team set to be named in a fortnight, the veteran prop will be racing the clock to take his place for Origin I on June 5.
Hannant was set to replace retired Maroons legend Petero Civoniceva in the Queensland starting line-up but coach Mal Meninga may be forced to alter those plans.
Broncos coach Anthony Griffin said Hannant won’t take his place in the Broncos side when they meet Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Hannant could join NSW fullback Brett Stewart (back) and Blues winger Brett Morris (knee) in the stands for the opening Origin game with both sides facing injury issues as Queensland chase an unprecedented eighth successive series win.
Canberra’s David Shillington would be Matt Scott’s likely partner in the Queensland starting front-row if Hannant is ruled out.
Broncos interchange prop Josh McGuire would be a contender for a bench spot in Hannant’s absence.
South Sydney’s Chris McQueen and Titans back-rower Dave Taylor are two other bench possibilities for Queensland.
