Maroons Mbye and Arrow fit for Origin

Injury concerns Moses Mbye and Jai Arrow have declared themselves certain starters for Queensland in next week’s State of Origin opener in Brisbane.

Bench utility Mbye on Wednesday gave himself the green light to make his Origin debut on June 5 after nursing a groin complaint, while Maroons prop Arrow said he had overcome a quad strain.

However both admitted to some anxious moments after being forced to sit out the NRL’s last round.

Wests Tigers captain Mbye admitted he even considered defying injury and running out in their round 11 clash with South Sydney after hearing he was in the Origin mix.

“I didn’t think I was a chance to miss Origin because I didn’t really put myself in the frame,” he said.

“So when I was started to get tossed up (as Maroons contender) I was already ruled out and no one knew.

“I was thinking ‘maybe I should go out and play’ but it was too late. But I still get to stand here and talk about the Maroons – it’s hard to believe.”

Arrow claimed he was “100 per cent” despite being sidelined for the Titans’ stirring NRL 36-18 win over Manly last Friday following a captain’s run mishap.

“The body is fine. I was running at Maroons training yesterday and pulled up really well – I will be firing come next Wednesday,” he said.

Still, Arrow was pinching himself when he arrived in Camp Maroon this week.

Twelve months ago the former Brisbane forward was battling to nail down a starting spot for Gold Coast Titans.

Now he is one of the first picked for Queensland and will pack down in the front-row with Canberra wrecking ball Josh Papalii on June 5.

“It’s been pretty surreal to be honest,” he said.

“This is the fourth time walking into camp and every time I look around and think ‘what the hell am I doing here’.

“But it’s something I want to be doing for years. I don’t want to let go of this jersey.”
