Manly’s Matai out of NRL for up to 6 weeks

Manly centre Steve Matai has been ruled out for up to six weeks after breaking his thumb in the Sea Eagles’ 26-20 NRL win over the Warriors on Sunday.

Eagles’ coach Geoff Toovey confirmed the news on Tuesday and admits the Kiwi Test star will be a big loss to his side ahead of Friday’s big clash with Wests Tigers in Gosford.

Glenn Stewart is also battling to be fit after dislocating his finger in the clash at Eden Park but Toovey is hopeful the NSW backrower will be able to line up against the Tigers.

“Stevie looks like he’s going to be out between four to six weeks which is disappointing as he’s a big player for us,” Toovey said.

“We have a few other bumps and bruises and are now waiting on the results of a scan on Glenn.

“We’re hoping he’ll be right, but we can’t decide until he’s spoken to the specialist and hopefully we’ll find out tonight (Tuesday).”

Five-eighth Kieran Foran was sporting ice packs on his knee and ankle at the Sea Eagles’ training ground on Sydney’s northern beaches, but Toovey was more optimistic about him recovering in time for Friday.

“He’s should be fine. It’s just a bump and a bruise and he’ll be off his feet for a few days and we’ll rest him up until the game,” he said.
