Manly won’t be fuelled by brawl: Toovey

Coach Geoff Toovey says the return of Manly’s victorious State of Origin trio, not memories of the Battle of Brookvale, will motivate his Sea Eagles for Monday’s NRL clash with Melbourne.

It will be the first time the two teams have met since round 25 last year when Manly’s Glenn Stewart and now Wests Tiger Adam Blair’s bust-up sparked an all-in brawl midway through the clash which the premiers won 18-4.

Memories of the melee have many expecting an emotion-charged match at Brookvale Oval but Toovey is adamant his side will not be fuelled by the rivalry when they face the table-topping Storm.

“No, they won’t be motivated by what happened last time. They’ll use their own methods to gear up for this game,” Toovey said on Thursday.

“What happened last time is long gone. The players are all just concentrating on this particular game.”

The Manly contingent of brothers Brett and Glenn Stewart and Anthony Watmough had a major impact on NSW’s game-two Origin win on Wednesday, with Brett scoring two tries in the 16-12 victory.

Toovey says his charges will try to harness the trio’s positive vibe when they face the rampant Storm.

“Coming off a win in State of Origin, I think the boys will bring that buzz back to training sessions and to the game coming up,” Toovey said.

“We just want to hopefully maintain that enthusiasm and hopefully it transfers to all our players on Monday night.

“I thought we were a bit flat after the game-one (Origin) loss against Penrith so hopefully this time it will work in reverse and that winning vibe will rub off on the rest of us.”

Manly, with five wins in their past six games, will be looking to take advantage of a weakened Storm side, with Billy Slater ruled out with a knee injury and blockbusting centre Will Chambers off the scene indefinitely with a blood clotting disorder.

“Billy is probably the best player in the competition at the moment – he’s a huge threat right across the park,” Toovey said.

“I think they will lose a little bit by him being out but, having said that, they’ve got some great replacements with great pace right across the park in the backline so I’m sure one of them will slot in there nicely.”

Toovey seemed certain all three Origin players will pull up fine for Monday while co-captain Jason King will make his return to the side.
