Maloney wants to remain a Rooster

Premiership-winning five-eighth James Maloney has revealed talks are underway between his manager and the club over a new contract.

Maloney is in the final 12 months of his three-year deal and has been heavily linked with a move to Manly as a possible replacement for Kieran Foran.

Foran is still weighing whether to accept an offer from Parramatta or remain with the Sea Eagles and Maloney is believed the man lined up to replace the Kiwi playmaker should he decide to move on.

The 27-year-old said he’s not had contact with anyone from Manly and his first preference is to remain with the Roosters.

However, with 14 players including representative stars Michael Jennings, Boyd Cordner, Sam Moa and Roger Tuivasa-Shek also seeking new deals Maloney knows there a chance he may be forced out.

“At the moment I am not too fussed about it,” Maloney told AAP on Wednesday.

“They have started talking with the club over a deal and hopefully that will get done.

“The talks have been positive and hopefully we can come to an arrangement, but the situation is that there are a lot of guys off-contract.

“I’d love to stay here, I’ve had some success and it’s a great club to be at.

“But if we can’t come to an agreement then we’ll have to start looking elsewhere.”

Although the Roosters retained the minor premiership last year they looked a shadow of the side that were so dominant in 2013, the defending champions bundled out of the finals by bitter rivals and eventual winners South Sydney.

Maloney’s inconsistent form mirrored that of the team last year and it led to his axing from the NSW State of Origin side.

Although he admits he was hurt at the snub from coach Laurie Daley he acknowledged his form wasn’t good enough and isn’t expecting a recall after the team finally ended a run of eight successive series losses to Queensland.

“It will be hard for him to change a winning side after finally beating Queensland,” he said.

“It’s not something I am thinking too much about but of course I would love to get back there.

“Laurie has always said the door isn’t closed so all I can do is play as well as possible for the Roosters and hopefully I get back in.

“Once you get a taste of playing Origin all you want is to get back there.”
