Lowe backs Burgess to come back stronger

South Sydney back-rower Sam Burgess will undergo scans on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury to the medial ligament in his left knee.

The England international was carried off just 24 minutes into the Rabbitohs’ dramatic 17-16 golden point win over Wests Tigers at Allianz Stadium and crumpled to the ground after making a tackle on Tigers prop Aaron Woods.

Souths’ medical team expect Burgess to be out for at least six weeks and teammate Ben Lowe said the 23-year-old, who’s been blighted with injuries throughout his career, is in good spirits.

“He’s been there before, the SFS is a bit of a graveyard for us,” Lowe said on Monday.

“I got injured there in round one last year, so did Sammy and Scott Geddes. But he’ll bounce back.”

Burgess’ older brother Luke is also on the sidelines recovering from a broken foot sustained in the Charity Shield against St George Illawarra.

Lowe believes the brothers will have a positive effect on each other during yet another rehabilitation period.

“They’re going to train together and I think they’ll be back around the same time,” Lowe said.

“They’ll knuckle down to it together and I am sure they’ll be back stronger.”
