Lillyman named Queensland 18th man

New Zealand Warriors forward Jacob Lillyman has been called up as Queensland’s new 18th man ahead of their must-win State of Origin game two clash with NSW.

Two years after he last played for the Maroons, Lillyman replaces Sydney Rooster Martin Kennedy after he injured his knee in Friday night’s 20-18 NRL win over the Bulldogs.

Lillyman will arrive at Queensland’s Sunshine Coast camp on Sunday night.

The 104kg Lillyman has played six Origins since 2006 but has not donned maroon since game three in 2011.

“We’ve been watching him closely for the last few weeks,” Queensland coach Mal Meninga said.

“He’s been part of our system and understands what we’re all about.

“He’s got good leg speed and he’ll suit the style of football that the team plays if he’s required on Wednesday night.”

The Maroons will continue their game two preparations with an opposed session against the Queensland under-18s team at Coolum on Sunday afternoon.

Queensland will be hoping to keep alive hopes of an eighth straight Origin series win with victory on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium.
