Leeds, Sydney NRL clubs rule out Segeyaro

James Segeyaro’s playing future remains in limbo after Leeds reportedly ruled out taking him back while Sydney-based NRL clubs are unwilling to recruit the hooker given the massive transfer fee demands.

The 26-year-old is in Australia after refusing to return from an off-season break to the English Super League club due to homesickness.

The Rhinos want a $A427,000 transfer fee for the former Penrith hooker and are considering legal action over his decision to renege on the final two years of his contract.

All nine Sydney NRL clubs – Canterbury, St George-Illawarra, Parramatta, Penrith, South Sydney, Sydney Roosters, Manly, Cronulla and Wests Tigers – ruled out signing him while under contract with Leeds, News Corp Australia reported on Wednesday.

“We have no interest in any player when they’re contracted to another club,” Sharks boss Lyall Gorman told News Corp.

“Our general principle is we wouldn’t invest in players with a transfer fee attached to them.”

Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington previously told Segeyaro he will not be granted his wish of an early release from his contract.

Hetherington told News Corp the club would not welcome Segeyaro back if he changed his mind and wanted to rejoin the Rhinos.
