Newcastle back-rower Beau Scott’s troublesome groin injury has coach Wayne Bennett fearing the Knights enforcer could have a serious issue to deal with.
Scott was forced off the ground early in Monday night’s 34-6 romp over North Queensland.
“He just felt it. He’s had a bit of trouble with it in the pre-season and we’ve had to take him to the best doctors in the land and tried to get him on track,” Bennett said.
“We thought we were on track but I’m just not sure. Maybe it’s scar tissue that’s been an issue for him, maybe it’s a bit worse than that.”
Bennett is also having to deal with a calf injury to star captain Kurt Gidley who was ruled out on the morning of the match.
“It was a bit weird actually, what happened there. We didn’t know he had a problem and he came into training and I saw him with the physio before training yesterday which is usually a bad sign,” Bennett said.
“I asked him what was going on and he said he felt his calf a bit sore at training late on Friday. He went and trained but it just didn’t get any better.”
Bennett will give Gidley all the time he needs after admitting Willie Mason was rushed back from a calf problem.
“I’ve been in that situation with Willie and we just didn’t want to lose him for a month … we might lose him for a week,” he said.
The Knights mentor said his team would have at least a couple of players returning from injury next week in centre Timana Tahu and Mason.
“We’ll get two back … Kurt I don’t know,” he said.
