Even win-less Gold Coast Titans believe results for the first two rounds should remain when the NRL resumes this year.
Sydney Roosters supremo Nick Politis raised eyebrows when he reignited the debate over whether points should be scrapped when the competition re-starts after the coronavirus shutdown.
Politis argued that all results should be wiped ahead of the planned May 28 resumption to ensure the “integrity” of the game, saying it had nothing to do with the two-time defending premiers’ 0-2 season start.
Fellow win-less outfits the Warriors and Cronulla have echoed Politis’ controversial call and last-placed Titans would be forgiven for doing the same.
Titans coach Justin Holbrook debut season started with two losses and a whopping -58 points differential.
But the cellar dwellers on Monday said they couldn’t see the logic in starting the season from scratch next month.
“The results should stand,” Titans executive chairman Dennis Watt told AAP.
“All teams worked hard for those results and they should be very much part of the 2020 season.”
Politis has copped plenty of criticism for his renewed call to start the season again, with undefeated Melbourne’s coach Craig Bellamy saying the Roosters chief was “just trying to look after his own club”.
Politis is not expected to get much love from the game’s powerbrokers either.
ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys last week was forced to step in and tell the game’s innovation committee to ditch a suggestion to dump the first two rounds’ points when the 2020 season resumes following a backlash from clubs and fans.
It has also been revealed a Rugby League Players Association working group has already agreed that the first two rounds of this year’s premiership should count.
Representatives from all clubs discussed the matter in a phone hook-up on Thursday, just hours after the competition’s planned re-start was confirmed.
