Sydney Roosters’ push for the NRL minor premiership is set to get a boost with five-eighth Luke Keary likely to be included in their 21-man squad for Saturday’s match against Brisbane.
Keary has missed the Roosters’ past three games after suffering a knee injury in their round 20 win over St George Illawarra that initially ruled him out for up to a month.
While utility Ryan Matterson has filled in admirably in Keary’s absence, Roosters co-captain Jake Friend admits the side has missed the attacking spark of their regular No.6.
Despite being sidelined for almost the past month, Keary is joint second in the league in try assists (17) and is fourth in support plays (456).
“It’s (been) big shoes to fill but I think Ryan’s done a good job there,” Friend said on Tuesday.
“They’re different players. We’ll see if Luke’s back this week. If not, Matto will do a job.
“Obviously Luke is a pretty crafty player and a big part of our attack.
“You can see in attack we’re probably missing him a bit.
“For us, whether he’s there or not, we’ve got to be better than we were last week (in a loss to Canberra).”
Keary’s inclusion would give coach Trent Robinson further thrust in attack as the Roosters hunt for what would be their fourth minor premiership in the past six seasons.
They are second but equal with ladder leaders Melbourne on 32 points, as well as third-placed South Sydney, with two games remaining in the regular season.
Their final match is against Parramatta at Homebush, meaning a top-two finish could ensure they don’t leave Sydney for the rest of the season.
“The top four’s important. History shows it’s important,” veteran Mitch Aubusson said.
“But for us, we’re coming off a big loss.
“We’re really hungry to get out there and right a few wrongs this weekend.”
