Keary and Reynolds key to Bunnies: GI

Having won just about every NRL trophy there is on offer, you could imagine South Sydney falling into complacency.

However captain Greg Inglis says the club’s young halves pairing of Adam Reynolds and Luke Keary is keeping everyone on their toes.

The Rabbitohs ended their 43-year premiership drought last year before ticking off more boxes in the pre-season.

They started by winning the Auckland Nines, then retained the Charity Shield with a draw against St George Illawarra before humbling English Super League champions St Helens 39-0 in the World Club Challenge.

The task now for coach Michael Maguire is to keep his players’ passion burning until the first weekend in October as they chase the first back-to-back premierships in a united competition since the 1992-93 Brisbane Broncos.

Many have been quick to sing Souths’ praises following their first-up dismantling of Brisbane but the Rabbitohs will receive a litmus test against fellow round 1 standouts and arch-rivals Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

Inglis was quick to remind his teammates that premierships aren’t won in March but said Keary and Reynolds were doing a good job of leading the squad around the park and keeping enthusiasm levels high.

“We just keep reminding ourselves even though we played well last week, we’ve got to step it up again this week,” Inglis said.

“It’s really good having such young halves because they’re always hungry and want to improve each and every week. So that’s good for me because it keeps me on my toes.

Inglis also tipped Rabbitohs hooker Issac Luke to have a big year and to be one of the big beneficiaries of the new ruck interpretations and quicker play-the-ball.

“You can tell from round 1 that the (new rule interpretations) are made for those types of hookers and with Issac being a running hooker and the style that he is, it works well in our favour.”
