Shaun Johnson has brushed off his new Kiwis all-time points record, saying personal accolades were the furthest things from his mind.

The Warriors-based playmaker bagged 22 points in Saturday’s 74-6 Rugby League World Cup rout of Scotland, and has now scored 175 points for his country – leapfrogging the legendary Matthew Ridge, who scored 168.

But if the 23-Test Johnson was pleased, he kept it to himself.

He told reporters it was great to be recognised alongside Ridge and Stacey Jones, but that he didn’t take much satisfaction from the new record.

“I’m just stoked we got the win and had a good performance – it’s probably something I’ll look back on when my career’s said and done,” Johnson said.

“A personal record like that is never on any of the players’ minds.

“It’s definitely not something I’m diving into too much.”

With a mediocre Scottish outfit cast aside, Johnson’s Kiwis will now look ahead to Saturday’s crunch match with Tonga, set to decide the winner of Pool B.

The winner of the pool will likely avoid Australia until the final.

Johnson said he was pleased with his side’s composure and ruthlessness against Scotland, but that Mate Ma’a would provide a far greater challenge.

Armed to the teeth with bustling forwards – including Kiwi defector Jason Taumalolo – they’d provide the Kiwis with their greatest test yet.

“It could’ve been easy for us to get carried away and start throwing balls around out of nowhere – but they were high-percentage plays, smart offloads, and that’s the sort of Kiwi footy we want to play,” the 27-year-old Johnson said.

“When you’ve got a pack like we do, it’s about not overplaying.

“The true test is when we get put under pressure and I think that, this week, we will for sure – it’s about how we respond to that.”
