Inglis hails Burgess impact for Souths

Greg Inglis says there are too many personnel changes to compare the current red-hot South Sydney side with the 2014 NRL premiership winners.

But he’s glad the Burgess brothers are still around.

Saturday’s 30-10 thumping of the Warriors was a fourth straight win for the Bunnies and their sixth from seven games to claim third spot.

Having struggled to match their title drought-busting deeds of four years ago, coach Anthony Seibold’s men are humming in all departments.

However, Inglis wavered when asked if a comparison can be made.

“It’s up there. The feeling’s there but that was 2014,” he said.

“We’re in this year now. We’ve got a great bunch of guys in there, a great coach and great support staff.

“There’s heaps of things that have changed since then but I know we’ve got a really good quality side here.”

Favoured to be named the new Queensland Origin captain on Monday, regular centre Inglis turned back the clock with a fine showing at fullback against the Warriors.

Two others who helped Souths bag their title four years ago, Adam Reynolds and John Sutton, also impressed at Mt Smart Stadium.

But it was the three Burgess siblings who had the biggest impact.

Sam was as busy as ever while twin starting props George and Tom were dominant against their Warriors counterparts, even with Tom sitting out an early stint in the sin bin and later being placed on report for tripping.

Both barged through multiple defenders for close-range tries in Souths’ dominant first half.

“I say it every week. The twins have been exceptional,” Inglis said.

“They’re big bodies and they get through a lot of minutes.

“When they’re starting well, guys like Damien (Cook) and Cody (Walker) get their plays on.”

Souths host another form Sydney side when they face Cronulla on Friday.
