Warriors hooker Nathan Friend said he would play on with a broken jaw again if he was struck by the same bad luck in an NRL match.
Friend bravely stayed on the field for the duration of the 30-20 win over Brisbane last weekend after copping the injury in the fifth minute.
Despite the blood and pain, he pulled off a team-high 53 tackles and laid on two tries.
Friend, who has had two plates inserted in his mouth, still had his sense of humour intact when asked if he would do it all again.
“I probably wouldn’t break my jaw again if I could help that,” he said on Friday.
“But I would play once again through that. At the end of the day, we got the victory and what more do you want?”
The injury happened in what Friend described as a normal tackle, but he collected Corey Parker’s shoulder and initially thought he had lost a tooth.
He stayed on because he didn’t know when he would get to play again and then saw team doctor John Mayhew at halftime.
“He said, `It’s up to you, everything seems structurally OK’,” Friend said.
“I did have the head gear on, so I think that was holding it in place. I thought, `Oh well, I’ll go out and see how I go.”
The 31-year-old Queenslander, who is in his first season with the Warriors after moving from Gold Coast, is expected to be out for six weeks.
He said the toughest part of the recovery so far was not being able to chew food.
“I thought it would be one of the easiest injuries I’ve had, but when you have to take it through the straw, it’s not that fun.”
