I want to play City-Country: Pearce

Incumbent NSW State of Origin halfback halfback Mitchell Pearce says he wants to play in next month’s City-Country clash in Dubbo, in opposition to NSW coach Laurie Daley’s likely plans to rest him from the representative fixture.

Daley has indicated he will give the Sydney Roosters star a weekend off during the representative round.

But Pearce, who is sure to be NSW halfback, says he is keen to play for City in a match that is set to be a genuine showdown for other positions in the NSW side for the State of Origin opener in Brisbane on May 28.

“I would love to play,” Pearce said.

“It’s an awesome week, I love spending time with Freddie (Fittler), and he’s the coach.

“It’s great getting in teams like that with all the boys from other teams. I would love to play.

“We’ll see what happens.”

Pearce, Josh Morris and Kurt Gidley are among those reportedly set to be rested from the clash as NSW attempt to end eight years of interstate dominance by Queensland.

But Pearce is keen to continue his representative education.

“It’s great mixing with other players,” he said.

“Just being in that rep environment is always a great buzz, you appreciate every opportunity you get.

“I would love to play if I get picked.

“At the moment I’m fully focused on Friday (Anzac Day against St George Illawarra).

“We need to get a good win.

“We just need a good performance full stop. We haven’t had two in a row for a while so that’s the main focus.”
