I didn’t deserve NSW selection: Taufua

Jorge Taufua believes his NRL form hasn’t warranted State of Origin selection after the tackle-busting Manly winger’s controversial omission for NSW for Game III.

Newcastle’s James McManus was something of a selection shock from Blues coach Laurie Daley for Wednesday night’s Suncorp Stadium clash with Brett Morris and Will Hopoate sidelined.

Taufua and Penrith’s Josh Mansour both boast superior stats to McManus with the Knights’ flyer even admitting his form has been down in 2014.

But a candid Taufua said on Tuesday he didn’t deserve to get picked for the Blues.

“Honestly, I didn’t really think it was going to happen this year,” he said.

“I have been in and out due to injuries but my form hasn’t really been up to scratch, so I’m not really disappointed.

“If I had played better, I might be there but credit to those who they have been picked and, hopefully, the Blues will get a clean sweep.

“I have been inconsistent this year. This time last year, I thought I was playing really good football and I’m just focusing on getting back to that. Maybe this time next year, Origin selection might come.”

Taufua missed Manly’s upset loss to Canterbury on Friday night due to an ankle injury and is a 50/50 proposition to take the field for the Sea Eagles’ round-18 match against the Wests Tigers at Brookvale Oval on Friday.

However, he insisted he would have been ready if selected for the Blues.

“If I was chosen, I could have done my rehab and physio a little bit more and I would have had a bit more time to rest so it would have been a different situation,” he said.

Clinton Gutherson is Manly’s likely replacement if Taufua is sidelined, with former Kangaroo David Williams continuing to play reserve grade.
