Michael Dobson brought up a half century of tries for Hull KR but the Australian halfback couldn’t prevent Salford picking up a first victory of the Super League season on Sunday as they ran out 38-34 winners.
Hull KR were celebrating a 24-14 lead at halftime, with Dobson having touched down twice to bring up 50 tries for the Robins since arriving from Canberra in 2008.
But although he ended up with five goals to his name as well and Hull KR led 34-14 with 30 minutes remaining, Dobson still ended up on the losing side as the visitors picked up their first points of the season to lift themselves off the bottom of the table.
Andrew Dixon started the fightback on 54 minutes and, after man of the match Marc Sneyd and Wayne Godwin were on the scoresheet, Rhys Williams scored the winning try with seven minutes left to ruin Dobson’s and Hull KR’s day.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Pat Richards scored a try and kicked six goals as Wigan Warriors bulldozed London Broncos 48-18.
Australian winger Richards helped himself to one of nine Warriors tries, with Josh Charnley and Iain Thornley both grabbing two.
Chad Randall and Michael Witt were on the scoresheet for the side from the capital, with a try and three goals respectively, but it was no more than consolation for the Broncos who have lost their opening four games.
The win lifted Wigan into third but leading the way are Huddersfield who maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign by squeezing past Wakefield 18-16.
Jermaine McGillvary scored a hat-trick for the league leaders but they were made to sweat late on as Ben Cockayne scored his sixth try of the season late on.
And there was no separating Castleford and Catalans Dragons as Gareth O’Brien’s late field goal earned the Tigers a 17-17 draw.
Australian-born winger Damian Blanch looked to have lifted the Dragons to victory with a 69th-minute try, only for O’Brien to earn his side a share of the spoils with a 20-metre kick.
On Saturday, last season’s Challenge Cup winners Warrington beat Hull 24-10, while Willie Manu grabbed his first St Helens try but was outshone by teammate Jonny Lomax who ran in a hat-trick as Bradford Bulls were thumped 36-10.
