How State of Origin affects your NRL club

HOW THE STATE OF ORIGIN PERIOD IS SHAPING UP FOR YOUR NRL CLUB

BRISBANE – Darius Boyd (Qld), Corey Oates (Qld), Anthony Milford (Qld), Matt Gillett (Qld), Josh McGuire (Qld), Sam Thaiday (Qld)

Usually hit hard by Origin selection and this year is no exception. Without six Queensland stars for Saturday’s clash with the Warriors in Auckland, but their round 15 and 18 byes coincide with Origin II and III. Post-Origin I opponents Sydney Roosters could have up to five players backing up.

CANBERRA – Josh Papalii (Qld)

Golden opportunity to play an undermanned Sydney Roosters on Sunday, with star backrower Josh Papalii their only representative casualty. They have byes for both of the other pre-Origin rounds.

CANTERBURY – David Klemmer (NSW), Brett Morris (NSW), Josh Jackson (NSW)

Face the Sharks on Saturday with both teams suffering losses. Play the Warriors in New Zealand less than 48 hours after Origin II and Newcastle before Origin III. Can rejuvenate with a bye after the series’ third game.

CRONULLA – James Maloney (NSW), Wade Graham (NSW), Jack Bird (NSW), Andrew Fifita (NSW)

Lose half of their spine and two star forwards for Saturday’s match with Canterbury. Likely to be in a similar position when they face Newcastle in round 18, but have a bye in the lead-up to Origin II. Paul Gallen won’t figure in the series for the first time since 2005.

GOLD COAST – Jarryd Hayne (NSW), Nathan Peats (NSW)

Have this week off but face the Rabbitohs four days before Origin II. Playing the Tigers the following week before a pre-Origin III bye and a four-day turnaround to Manly in round 19.

MANLY – Nate Myles (Qld), Jake Trbojevic (NSW)

Have byes for the first two Origins but will be without representative players for the round-18 clash with Penrith. Host Canberra four days after Wednesday’s series opener and Cronulla on the Sunday after Origin II. Penrith likely to field a strong side in round 18.

MELBOURNE – Cooper Cronk (Qld), Cameron Smith (Qld), Will Chambers (Qld), Jordan McLean* (NSW)

Coach Craig Bellamy is a past master at managing the Origin period. Billy Slater narrowly missed out on a return to representative football and will be pushing for inclusion later in the series. A bye this week and matches against North Queensland and Parramatta with their stars likely to be camp with Queensland.

NEWCASTLE – Dane Gagai (Qld)

With byes for the first two Origins, they will be targeting the Storm and Dragons in the rounds following. They face Canterbury without representative players in round 18.

NORTH QUEENSLAND – Justin O’Neill (Qld), Michael Morgan (Qld), Johnathan Thurston* (Qld)

If Thurston is fit the Cowboys will lose him for their round-15 assignment in Melbourne while they have the bye in round 18. The Titans, Panthers and Rabbitohs are their post-Origin opponents.

PARRAMATTA – nil

Play the Rabbitohs on Friday but both clubs have no players on Origin duty. The Dragons and Storm will be without their Origin-selected players in rounds 15 and 18 respectively. Byes in the rounds following Origin I and II.

PENRITH – Matt Moylan* (NSW)

A bye this week to freshen up before Canterbury next Sunday. A trip to Townsville in round 16 made slightly less daunting by being three days after Origin II. Host Manly in round 18 and travel to New Zealand the following week.

SOUTH SYDNEY – nil

Untouched by Origin but their advantage is cancelled out for Friday’s match against the Eels. Will be keen to drive their advantage home against the Titans (round 15) and Roosters (round 18).

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA – Josh Dugan (NSW), Tyson Frizzell (NSW), Jack De Belin* (NSW)

Byes this week and round 18. Play the Eels, who are unaffected by selection, in round 15. Post-Origin assignments are Wests Tigers (round 13), Newcastle (round 16) and Canberra (round 19).

SYDNEY ROOSTERS – Dylan Napa (Qld), Blake Ferguson (NSW), Mitchell Pearce (NSW), Boyd Cordner (NSW), Aidan Guerra (NSW)

Face a near full-strength Raiders on Sunday and an also-depleted Brisbane next week. Have byes before Origin II and after Origin III, leaving them undermanned in round 15 against South Sydney.

WARRIORS – Jacob Lillyman (Qld)

With only one player out the Warriors will be desperate to keep their good record during the Origin period intact. They face Brisbane at home this week before byes in the lead-up to the other two matches.

WESTS TIGERS – James Tedesco (NSW), Aaron Woods (NSW)

Bye this week and before Origin III. Host the Titans two days after Origin II and less than a week after their round-15 clash with the Sharks.
