Hayne dodges surgery, out for a month

Gold Coast coach Neil Henry has not ruled out making a play for Sydney Roosters’ Dale Copley after the Titans injury-ravaged backline stocks took another hit with Jarryd Hayne sidelined for up to six weeks.

Henry said Hayne would not require surgery for an ankle complaint suffered in last round’s NRL loss in Newcastle but would be unavailable for four to six weeks.

“Scans have shown significant ligament damage but it’s not as bad as first (thought) which would have required an operation,” Henry said.

Winger Anthony Don and hooker Karl Lawton are also expected to miss at least a month after both injuring shoulders against the Knights.

Henry is now scrambling for options ahead of Friday night’s home clash with undefeated Parramatta.

But he is also looking long term, admitting Copley would be the “right fit” for the Titans.

“It’s been tossed up but there is no formal offer,” Henry said of Copley.

“But we could use some outside backs at the moment.

“We will wait and see. He could be an outside chance.”

Former Titans skipper William Zillman (calf) and English import Dan Sarginson (knee) are a chance to return from injury and replace Hayne at fullback.

But Henry put a line through Daniel Vidot (groin), John Olive (pectoral), Nathan Peats (shoulder) and Pat Politoni (arm) ahead of the Eels clash.

“I don’t think I have had this many out this early in the season for a long time, if ever,” Henry said.

“It’s a tough time for the club.

“And we are coming up against a Parramatta side that are the benchmark.

“They will come here with a lot of confidence.”
