Jarryd Hayne has denied seeking to exit NRL club Gold Coast despite his agent reportedly claiming the Titans star is seeking a return to Sydney for personal reasons next year.
Hayne has taken to social media to dismiss a News Corp report that claimed his agent Wayne Beavis told the Titans his charge wanted an early release to be closer to his daughter in Sydney.
“I have NOT instructed my manger (sic) to SPEAK to teams in Sydney. @BuzzRothfield #slownewsday” Hayne tweeted.
On World Cup duty for Fiji, Hayne also told reporters at Bati training in Townsville on Thursday that he wasn’t going anywhere.
“If I wanted a move back to Sydney or to any club I would’ve done it at the start of the year.” Hayne denies Titans exit,” Nine News Townsville tweeted.
The Titans on Thursday said they expected Hayne back at pre-season training after his World Cup stint and had not received any release request from the ex-San Francisco 49ers player.
“Jarryd Hayne is contracted to the Titans for the 2018 season,” a Titans statement said.
“The Titans have not been in negotiation with any other club regarding the future of Jarryd Hayne.
“There has been no application made for Jarryd to be released from his Titans contract.
“It is the Titans expectation that Jarryd will return for pre season training after his World Cup commitments with Fiji, and his annual leave entitlements, have been completed.
“The club will not be making any further comment on the matter unless any of the above circumstances unexpectedly change.”
Hayne is off contract at the end of next season, and as of Tuesday was able to enter in negotiations with other clubs for 2019.
Hayne’s Sydney options next year already appear limited.
South Sydney, Penrith and Newcastle have already declared they’re not interested.
Wests Tigers chief executive Justin Pascoe is overseas but it’s understood Hayne may not be considered an ideal fit for the club.
His former club Parramatta have remained coy on the situation, with CEO Bernie Gurr telling News Corp he wouldn’t comment on recruits.
Hayne, 29, has only been on the Gold Coast for 15 months, after he returned from stints in the NFL and Fijian rugby sevens.
His 2017 season ended on a sour note after he had a public falling out with coach Neil Henry, before the veteran mentor was sacked by the club.
