Greg Bird facing Origin ban

NSW back-rower Greg Bird is set to miss the first State of Origin match on May 28 after being slapped with a grade three dangerous throw charge by the NRL judiciary.

Bird was placed on report for a lifting tackle on South Sydney’s Bryson Goodwin in the 60th minute of Gold Coast’s 40-18 loss to the Rabbitohs on Saturday.

Bird is facing a four-match ban with an early guilty plea and up to six weeks on the sidelines if he challenges the charge and loses.

Either scenario will as a minimum rule him out of selection for the NSW team for the first Origin match.

Not only is Bird poised to miss the Origin match, he will be unavailable for the Titans starting with Friday’s Queensland derby against Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

Souths’ Koroisau Apisai is facing between two to three games on the sidelines after he copped a grade two dangerous throw charge on Bird in Saturday’s match.

Queensland pair Cameron Smith and Billy Slater can both avoid suspension if they take the early plea on their respective charges.

Smith was given a grade one dangerous contact charge from his clash with Manly’s Matt Ballin while Slater copped a grade one high tackle charge for his second-half collision with David Williams in the same game.

The Maroons duo will both be free to play for Melbourne this weekend although Smith would receive a one-match ban if he challenged the charge and lost.

Storm teammate Ben Hampton faces a potential three-game ban for another dangerous throw charge, this time on Manly’s Tom Symonds in the 63rd minute of Saturday’s match at AAMI Park.

Hampton can cut his suspension to two matches with an early guilty plea.

Panthers halfback Peter Wallace, Newcastle’s Adam Clydesdale, Wests Tigers’ Akauola Sitaleki and North Queensland’s Jason Taumalolo will all avoid suspension with the early plea on their respective charges.
