Tom Trbojevic’s right ankle scare is the least of Manly’s injury concerns after they were left to count the costs of their 32-16 win over Canberra.
Trbojevic set up four tries for the Sea Eagles and scored one of his own, before he limped off following a hit as he passed the ball.
The 22-year-old has previously had surgery on the same ankle at the end of 2016, but his brother Jake claimed he was “sweet” after the match and would likely be fine to face the Gold Coast next Sunday.
Regardless, Trbojeic injury left Manly with just one man on the bench after Curtis Sironen and Kelepi Tanginoa were both taken from the field with potentially serious knee injury.
Both forwards are expected to face a long period on the sideline, which will come as a blow to Manly’s forward depth and likely see Darcy Lussick and Frank Winterstein recalled.
“Our biggest concerns are around Siro and Kelepi, with possible ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or MCL (medial ligament) injuries, we’re not sure. So fingers crossed,” coach Trent Barrett said.
The injuries did little to dampen Manly’s spirits though after the remaining forwards got through a heap of work to help set up Trbojevic’s brilliance.
The fullback looked dangerous from his first touch of the ball in Manly’s opening set, and finished with seven tackle busts, three linebreak assists, three linebreaks of his own to go with his significant involvement in each of Manly’s five tries.
Trbojevic is now set to push James Tedesco for the NSW’ No.1 jersey, after he played in last year’s World Cup for Australia on the wing.
“The World Cup was real good for him, just being around the best players,” Barrett said.
“He’s getting older and the more footy he plays, he’s still got a lot to learn.
“But no doubt he could be anything Turbo, if he can get a little luck with his injuries. You don’t get too many blokes who are that big and can run like him and know where to be.”
Captain Cherry-Evans also agreed he’d developed significantly in the past six months.
“There were times last year where Tom might make an error early in a game,” he said.
“He obviously didn’t make many errors tonight – but when he has this year he’s flushed it and it’s gone and his next job and next touch of the football is as good as it can be.
“He’s come so far as a footy player and he’s got so much to learn. I’m really enjoying playing alongside him and when he puts on a performance like tonight it’s exciting to watch.”
