If things had worked out as planned for Jason Ryles he would be running out for the Sydney Roosters against the Storm in their NRL clash on Sunday.
Instead he’s helping to plot their downfall.
Ryles was cut from the Roosters at the end of last season and was snapped up by Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy.
After a slow start to the year due to injury, the veteran, who will start from the bench, is starting to prove he’s money well spent.
Teammate Todd Lowrie, who has overcome an ankle injury to play, said the 32-year-old former Test representative was doing what he could to help his new side.
“Whenever you come up against at a side and you’ve got a player that used to play in that team it’s always handy to find out some inside tips,” Lowrie said.
“He’s been able to give us a few things that we could look at because being a senior player there he had a pretty good insight.”
The Storm have started the season with a flourish, winning three from three including a crushing defeat of the Gold Coast the last week.
They have made one change to their line-up with State of Origin centre Dane Nielsen returning after having teeth knocked out.
Bellamy is still demanding they improve their ball control through the middle of the match; although they weren’t in the same ball-park as the Roosters’ lowly 51 per cent in their win over Canberra last round.
“Obviously we’ve had three wins so you couldn’t ask for much more but we’ve got quite a few areas we’re very unhappy with,” Lowrie said.
The lock believed the Roosters had shown if they too cut out the errors they were a formidable side, with threatening players like Shaun Kenny-Dowall and centre BJ Leilua, who scored a hat-trick the last times the sides met.
“They had a scrappy game but if you take out those dropped balls they played some good footy.
“If things stick for them they can be a very dangerous side and you’ve seen glimpses of that over the last couple of weeks.
“If things come off for them they can be very hard to handle.”
