Foran in doubt for season opener

Kieran Foran admits he’s in doubt for Parramatta’s NRL season opener against Brisbane on Thursday night.

The Eels’ marquee signing revealed on Tuesday he aggravated a chronic hamstring injury on the weekend and has only managed to run at 80 per cent since this week.

While desperate to take on the Broncos at Pirtek Stadium, Foran said he wouldn’t play unless 100 per cent.

“I had a slight strain maybe on Sunday. We’re not too sure whether it was a strain or whether it is scar tissue,” the playmaker told the Nine Network.

“Obviously I’ve been prone to hamstring injuries over the years and there is a lot of scar tissue in my left knee, so it could be that.

“I ran on it today, probably around the 75 to 80 per cent mark and got through that okay.

“But I won’t play unless I’m 100 per cent.”

The Manly premiership winner said he remained “optimistic” of being fit to tackle last year’s grand final losers.

“I’m holding some hope that I will get through the captain’s run and that I will be right to take the field,” Foran said.

“It would mean the world for me to be out there with the guys for this first game, especially after a long, hard pre-season.”

Ironically, Foran is still battling the same hamstring injury he first damaged in last year’s season opener at the same ground.

On that occasion, the New Zealand international was playing for Manly against the Eels.

He went on to miss five matches for the Sea Eagles, while often struggling to play through the injury.
