Fonua-Blake caught in second abusive rant

Manly forward Addin Fonua-Blake allegedly called an NRL referee a ‘spastic’ in a second foul-mouthed tirade during a confrontation in the tunnel at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

It comes after he was sent from the field by referee Grant Atkins for calling him a ‘f***ing retard’ after the fulltime whistle was blown in his team’s dramatic loss to Newcastle.

The allegations were revealed after a leaked copy of the referee’s report was sent to 2GB on Tuesday morning, and there is a suggestion the NRL’s Integrity Unit could get involved.

Fonua-Blake is understood to have crossed paths with the referee in the tunnel after being sent from the field, saying: “Are your eyes f***ing painted on you bunch of spastics?”

He has already pleaded guilty to a grade-three contrary conduct charge handed down by the NRL’s Match Review Committee and will miss two weeks.

The sentence has come under fire considering the discriminatory and offensive language that was used, which could prompt the NRL’s administrators to intervene.

However, it’s understood the MRC considered the referee’s report and was aware of Fonua-Blake’s second tirade at Atkins when making their determination.

A grade-three contrary conduct charge is the highest that can be given to a player for misconduct unless it is referred directly to the judiciary for a more severe penalty.

In 2015 then-Canterbury prop James Graham had a four-week charge reduced to three for using foul language at a referee, while Fonua-Blake faced a maximum of three weeks if he contested the charge.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys, a well-known advocate for equality and inclusivity, has been contacted for comment.

In November, Manly Sea Eagles players trained with Special Olympics athletes.

On Sunday Special Olympics Australia account Tweeted: “The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It’s offensive. It’s derogatory. Language affects attitudes and attitudes affect actions. All clubs and players within @NRL need to be reminded of this and asked to #ChooseToInclude.”
