Fisiiahi has easy formula for try-scoring

Flying Warriors winger Glen Fisiiahi has a pretty uncomplicated explanation for his rash of NRL tries.

He just catches the ball and puts it down.

Fisiiahi’s four-try bag in the Warriors’ 42-18 win over the Wests Tigers in Wellington last weekend took his season’s tally to seven after four rounds.

“It just comes off the back of the boys sticking to our offensive game plan,” he said.

“I just had the easy part of catching it and putting it down.”

Fisiiahi said it helped to be playing outside someone like the bullocking Konrad Hurrell, who came off the bench early against the Tigers after starting centre Jerome Ropati broke his jaw.

In his 68 minutes on the field, Hurrell was credited with carrying the ball for 182 metres and producing six tackle breaks, two line breaks and two offloads.

He threw the final pass for three of Fisiiahi’s tries – the other came from an acrobatic effort by “Fish” after chasing a kick into the in-goal.

“You just have to stay around Konrad,” Fisiiahi said.

“You know he’s going to attract a few defenders. When he does that, he’s got the off-load game as well, so you just have to stay alive.”

Fisiiahi, 23, made his first-grade debut at the start of 2011, but injuries have contributed to restricting him to 19 appearances before the start of this season.

The Tonga international has played all four matches so far in 2014 and said it was good to get back-to-back wins after the Warriors opened with two losses.

He also had a special word for Ropati, who is facing up to 12 weeks on the sidelines after the former Kiwi’s bad run of injuries continued.

“You’ve got to feel for Jerome,” Fisiiahi said.

“He’s one of my idols and someone I look up to during training and especially in a game, so best wishes to him.”
