Ferguson keen to be a Rooster long term

Blake Ferguson has set his sights on playing out his career with Sydney Roosters, after re-signing with the NRL club on Wednesday.

Ferguson has put his chequered past behind him to emerge as a key figure at the Roosters this year, after his 18 month self-inflicted exile from rugby league.

He has been rewarded for his efforts with a new two-year deal at Bondi and the former Cronulla and Canberra three-quarter said he wants to stick with the foundation club for good.

“I do hope to stay at the club beyond this,” Ferguson said.

“I have just signed this contract so I have to honour that first but when the time comes I can hopefully sort out another one.

“I’ve signed for two years and now the incentive is there (to work) for another contract after this.”

“I wanted to change and better myself not for other people but for my own self satisfaction and to be rewarded with a new contract is really pleasing.”

Ferguson, 25, missed a season and a half of football after being sacked by Canberra for off field issues and being found guilty of indecent assault in February last year. He said he thought for a time that he would never return to the game.

“There were times there when I thought my career had ended and I started to look for other things to do,” he said.

“I was trying to find ways to make money but this now is not about money for me, it is about me being happy.

“The club has helped me on and off the field and basically just shown me love and I love the group of guys we do have here.”

Coach Trent Robinson praised the way Ferguson has fitted into the Roosters’ set-up.

“There’s no denying that Blake is a terrific athlete, but more importantly, he’s worked hard to gain the trust and respect of the coaching staff and his teammates via his attitude to training and his commitment to being a positive contributor off the field as well,” Robinson said.

“I have no doubt that Blake will continue to work hard and be a keen contributor at our club over the next few years.”

Ferguson has scored six tries in his 11 matches for the Roosters this season, after struggling with a recurrent ankle injury earlier this year.
