Fans cram Redfern, NRL title celebrations

Thousands of South Sydney fans have crammed into and around Redfern Oval on Monday afternoon to continue celebrating the NRL club’s long-awaited and record-breaking 21st premiership.

Lines to get into the Rabbitohs’ spiritual home snake halfway around the block after Souths ended their 43-year title drought with a 30-6 win over Canterbury in the grand final on Sunday night.

The streets around Redfern Oval are awash with red and green and chants of “South Sydney” can be heard from blocks away.

Around 10,000 fans are expected to attend the celebrations.

The sole grandstand at the refurbished Redfern Oval, which can hold 3000 fans, is full.

There is a significant police presence and all fans who enter the ground are having their bags searched.

Outside the grand the line in front of the club’s merchandise van is 200m long.

Coach Michael Maguire, captain John Sutton and the rest of the playing group are expected to address the crowd sometime after 1.30pm.

Clive Churchill Medallist Sam Burgess is expected to take part in the celebrations, despite fracturing a cheekbone in the first tackle of the grand final.

Burgess will undergo surgery on the injury on Tuesday.
